The word ministry is derived from a Latin word meaning “to render service”. It is used to describe the different ways in which all Catholics, lay and ordained, exercise functions within the Church. A ministry has the ultimate aim of expressing the presence of Christ in the world and discovering the reality of God's kingdom as Jesus taught it.
All the baptized are called to minister to the needs of others. Some may discover their ministry in visiting the sick, some in reading at Mass, distributing Holy Communion, or serving at the altar. Some may be good at welcoming newcomers, leading youth groups or organizing the music for the liturgy. Some may be called simply to pray. Many ministries are discovered in the Church, so that each person has a unique contribution to make, however large or small. The Church is not a passive organization, but an active, vital body bringing life to the community and the world.
