In its original meaning, liturgy is a "public work" or service done in the name of or on behalf of the people. Through the liturgy Christ our High Priest continues the work of our redemption through the Church's celebration of the Paschal Mystery: Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension. The Paschal Mystery is made present in the liturgy of the church, and its savings effects are communicated through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist.
Through the liturgy and rituals of the Church, local churches are joined together throughout the world. Liturgy through the celebration of the Mass helps keep our ancient faith alive and brings its members into closer communication with Christ and his Church. The Mass represents the body of Christ, joined together in love and devotion. It represents 2,000 years of Christians gathered in faith. It represents a world-wide Church that continues to gather despite persecutions, changing cultures and modern influences.
